SELINSGROVE, Pa. (June 9) — Coleby Frye of Dover, Pa., came away with a Spring Championship victory Saturday at Selinsgrove Speedway following a suspenseful battle with division points leader Jeff Rine of Danville, Pa.

Frye’s $2,500 victory was the ninth of his career at the speedway and he became the track’s fifth different late model feature winner in 2012. | Slideshow

Frye and Rine shared the front row with Frye powering into the lead and Rine chasing him around the top of the track at full throttle.

In the early laps, Frye led Rine, third-starting Bryan Bernheisel, sixth-starting fast qualifier Gregg Satterlee and fifth-starting Jamie Lathroum. On the eighth circuit, Satterlee passed Bernheisel for the third position. At the halfway point, a close battle unfolded for second between Rine and Satterlee.

By lap 18, however, Frye began to approach slower traffic, allowing Rine and Satterlee to reel in the leader. With five laps remaining, Rine was in striking distance and looking for a way around Frye. Entering turn one on lap 27, when Rine attempted an inside pass for the lead, he and Frye made contact, sending Rine’s car into a wild spin.

On the final restart, Frye maintained the lead as Lathroum passed Satterlee for second. At the finish, Lathroum made a last-ditch effort to steal the lead and win exiting turn four but came up just .49 of a second short. Frye was victorious over Lathroum, Satterlee, Bryan Bernheisel and Dylan Yoder.
