Leavell wins SBB event at Natural Bridge

May 19, 2012, 6:44 am
From series reports

Joey Leavell of Waynesboro, Va. scored a $2,000 victory in Friday night’s 30-lap Steel Block Bandits feature at Natural Bridge Speedway earning his second-career victory on the Limited Late Model touring series.

Greg Roberson of Waynesboro, Va., scored the runner-up finish with Andy Fries of Mercersburg, Pa., third. Denny Bonebrake of Hagerstown, Md., finished fourth with two-time, defending series champion Walker Arthur of Forest, Va., rounding out the race’s top five finishers.

Leavell started sixth while the polesitting Fried led most of the race. After a lap-11 caution when J.R. Overstreet smacked the turn-one wall — he destroyed the left side of his car but was uninjured — Leavell lined up behind Fries and began working on the leader. Leavell made the winning pass on the 22nd lap and pulled away to win by nearly three seconds.

Notes: Leavell’s Barry Wright Race Car is sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, R.D. Via Enterprises, Martin’s Drywall, Ace Machining, AFCO Racing Shocks and B&M Products. … Leavell’s previous SBB victory came on June 18, 2010 at Beckley Motorsports Park. … The race was the first leg of a weekend doubleheader for the tour, which moves to Eastside Speedway in Waynesboro, Va., Saturday night for a $1,500-to-win event.
