Dale McDowell emerges from his race car in victory lane at Rome.
What won the race: Catching race-long leader Donald McIntosh in traffic, Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., stepped to the outside and grabbed the lead on lap 30 of the 50-lap main event and led the remaining distance, besting Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., for the $6,000 Schaeffer Oil Spring Nationals victory at Rome (Ga.) Speedway.
Quotable: "Hat's off to Donald. He drove his tail off there and drove me clean when we got beside each other," said McDowell. "It looked like he got a little tight and bottled up in lapped traffic. And when you're careful in that lapped traffic, I mean it's anybody's game. It's harder to lead than it is to run second. I just went where he wasn't."
Key notes: The race was slowed by four cautions. ... Nine of the 21 starters finished on the lead lap. ... It was the season-finale for the nine-race tour that runs from March to May. ... Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., finished second Sunday to protect his 12-point series lead. Overton outlasted two-time defending series champion Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., to capture his first tour title. … It was the third series race during this three-race Memorial Day weekend stretch. ... Overton won at Boyd's Speedway in Ringgold, Ga., on Friday, while McDowell won Saturday at Dixie Speedway near Woodstock, Ga. ... The win was McDowell's sixth career Spring Nationals victory, tying him with Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., for the most in the history of the five-year series. ... Overton won three races en route to the title. ... The series lost its most lucrative race, a $15,000-to-win event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., first to snow on March 11 and then to rain on May 4. It will not be made up. ... McIntosh has finished third or better in series points each of the last four years. ... Ahnna Parkhurst won Sunday's Crate Late Model feature, leading flag to flag.
Winner's sponsors: McDowell’s Sweet-Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Textron Off Road, New Era Industrial, Boyd’s Speedway, Will Kinzer Foundation, Cometic Gasket and Klotz Lubricants.
Points chase: Leading by 12 points entering Sunday's finale at Rome, Brandon Overton drove to a runner-up finish to secure the series championship. His closest pursuer, Donald McIntosh, stayed in the hunt with a third-place finish Sunday, but fell just short of his third straight series title.
