What won the race: Fourth-starting Russ King of Bristolville, Ohio, inherited the lead upon Dave Hess Jr.'s early retirement, then fought off challenges from ninth-starting Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., for a $3,000 victory Saturday at Mercer Raceway Park on the Zimmer's United Late Model Series.
Quotable: “I lost last night (at Lernerville); we were leading and I got stuck behind lapped traffic, and I had it in my head that I was going to roll over every lapped car if I had to, ’cause I didn’t want to lose again like that," King said.
Key notes: King earned his third career Zimmer's United Late Model Series victory. ... It was his first Late Model victory at Mercer. ... Dave Hess Jr. of Waterford, Pa., led King early but dropped out after his car stopped between turns three and four. ... King built a straightaway lead before Max Blair charged into the picture, but after a restart with five laps remaining, King pulled away for the victory. .... Runner-up Max Blair was a former track champion in the track's previous Crate Late Model division. ... Charles Powell Jr. recovered from a flat tire to finish eighth.
On the move: Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., charged from ninth to finish second.
Winner's sponsors: King's No. 56 is sponsored by King's Sanitary Service, University Hospitals and Essroc.
Points chase: Entering the weekend (and after a single series event), Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., had 35 points to lead Jared Hawkins (33) and Eddie Carrier Jr. (32). None raced at Mercer.
Car count: 20
Polesitter: John Volpe
Heat race winners: Jared Miley, Dave Hess Jr., Max Blair
Next series race: June 1, Tyler County Speedway (Middlebourne, WV) $3,000
