Ryan Gustin moves under Terry Phillips for the winning pass.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, went under polesitter Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., with 13 laps remaining for a $5,000 victory in the Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association-sanctioned ABC 17 Fall Nationals. Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, wrapped up his first MLRA crown with a runner-up finish.
Quotable: "It seemed like the longer it went, the better our car got," said Gustin, whose first pass of Phillips was erased by a caution. "It was a good night and an awesome racetrack. It has been a great season."
Key notes: Gustin got into the back of the slower-running Brian Schutt with seven laps remaining to draw the final yellow. ... Gustin has five career MLRA victories, four on the 2014 season. ... His previous series wins came at Randolph County Speedway, Humboldt Speedway and Junction Motor Speedway. ... Chad Simpson's MLRA title is his 10th championship over eight seasons. "These championships, they're just amazing," Simpson said. "We really wanted to get a win in the series this year. We're consistent, we've got good equipment, we've got good cars. We made so many changes this year, for us to still run as consistent as we did, just tells a lot about our whole team." ... Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo., debuted a new Club 29 Race Car; he started the season in the new chassis brand before going back to Rocket Chassis for most of 2014. ... Saturday's event was scheduled to be the second of two nights of action for the Fall Nationals, but Friday's program was canceled due to rain. ... Scott Lewis of Henderson, Colo., wrapped up the Sunoco Race Fuels Rookie of the Year honors. ... Among drivers failing to make the feature lineup: Skip Frey, Leroy Johnson, Jacob Magee and Larry Jones.
Winner's sponsors: Gustin’s Ed and Cinde Gressel-owned Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Eibach Springs, FastShafts by AxleExchange, Hinchman Racewear, Integra Racing Shocks, McCarthney Welding, Midwest Hearing Aids, R2C Performance Products, Sybesma Graphics and VP Race Fuels.
Points chase: Chad Simpson clinched the 2014 MLRA title over Terry Phillips.
