Brandon Sheppard climbed atop the Rocket Chassis house car.
What won the race: Overtaking polesitter Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., on lap 15 of 50, second-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., led the remaining circuits for his first career Southern All Stars victory at Smoky Mountain Speedway. He collected a $7,500 payday.
Quotable: "Going to Bulls Gap last night really helped me out a lot," said Sheppard. "Driving for Mark (Richards) and this team is just amazing and I learn stuff every week. I just keep learning and learning and it means a lot to me to be able to drive this car. Me and Mark just talked a lot this week and just talked about what I needed to do as a driver. We've got a good piece every week ... you know I'm still learning and stuff. It feels awesome to get a win here at Smoky Mountain."
Key notes: Sheppard notched his sixth Super Late Model victory of 2017; his last came in World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series action at Farmer City Raceway on April 1. ... The race was slowed by one caution on the initial start. ... Sixth-place finisher Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., was the winner of Friday's Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway. ... Entering the event, Casey Roberts of Toccoa, Ga., topped the series points standings, but he was not among Saturday's competitors. ... The series made the first of three scheduled stops at Smoky Mountain; the tour returns to the Maryville oval on June 17 for a $5,000-to-win event. ... Sheppard, Madden and the rest of the WoO regulars have a race at Smoky Mountain on May 13.
On the move: Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., advanced from the 16th starting position to notch a top-10 finish.
Winner's sponsors: Sheppard's Rocket Chassis is powered by a Durham Race Engine and sponsored by Valvoline, Ace Metal Works, Seubert Calf Ranches, Gunter's Honey and Hoosier Racing Tire.
