Kari Gasser of Vienna, Ohio, made history on Saturday at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway in becoming the first female winner in the track’s Super Late Model division.

Gasser, who was the first female winner in any class with an E-mod victory in 2005, shed a few tears in crossing the finish line at the half-mile oval in her UPS Freight-sponsored Rocket Chassis owned by Joe Johnson.

“I can’t quit crying,” Gasser said in beginning her victory lane interview. “(The tears) just came when I seen that checkered flag.”

Gasser broke through as a winner at a historic track where the list of Super Late Model track champions includes Steve Baker, Mike Johnson, John Flinner, Mark Banal, Lynn Geisler and other long-time veterans.

“Before I come here, I think, ‘I’m never going to win in this division, it’s so tough.’ I mean, the guys I’m racing with have been racing for as long as I am old,” Gasser said. “I never thought it would come, but it’s here. I can’t believe it!”

Tommy Beck took the lead early in the race with the third-starting Gasser and Geisler giving chase. Gasser pulled even with Beck a few times, but couldn’t complete the pass as Geisler and Michael Norris battled for third behind them.

After Norris had a flat tire to draw a yellow, and another caution flew on the restart, Gasser went to the outside and made the move work in taking the lead from Beck. Ferree dropped Beck to third and a lap-21 restart set up a dash to the checkers.

Gasser held off Ferree the rest of the way while Baker, Geisler and Norris rounded out the top five.

Other female feature winners in PPMS history are Laura Lukon in Crate Late Models, Deana Groves in E-mods along with Sara Schrum and Hannah Ramsey in the young gun division.
