BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (Sept. 19) — Just one week after capturing his first career World 100 victory at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., returned to victory lane, earning a $20,000 payday in Brownstown Speedway’s 36th annual Jackson 100.
Charging from the 14th starting position, Davenport worked his way around the bottom of the racetrack, overtaking outside polesitter Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., on lap 49. The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points leader lead the remaining circuits to score his 11th tour victory of the 2015 season, the 15th of his career.
“I tell you what, that’s a perfectly set up race car right there,” Davenport said in victory lane. “This is probably my hardest win for myself. That just ain’t me, running around them tires around the bottom like that. I’d rather be zinging around the top or something like that. That’s just what I can say for this race team.”
Davenport, who’s stellar 2015 season has included victories in the some of the sport’s richest crown jewel events, admitted that he was a bit uneasy entering the Jackson 100 weekend, as Brownstown had always been a challenge. The Georgia driver finished 12th in the Lucas Oil-sanctioned Indiana Icebreaker back in March.
“I told Kevin (Rumley), this right here is part of what could probably bite us in the butt the most, because I’ve never been any good here,” Davenport said. “I just can’t believe … we just won the Jackson 100 at Brownstown. This is something awesome.”
Polesitter Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., grabbed the runner-up spot, with Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, rallying from the 16th starting position to finish third. Second-starting Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., finished fourth, with four-time Jackson 100 winner Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., rounding out the top five.
“Jonathan (Davenport) had a better car than all of us,” Marlar said. “There late in the race I probably found something that he wasn’t seeing and Devin (Moran) was probably finding more that I wasn’t getting. I got to give my team really good credit because we’re getting to race with these guys. But those guys (Davenport) are just doing unbelievable things. Congratulations to them.”
Marlar, who set the overall fast time for the Jackson 100 for the second straight year, battled Sheppard in the early running, pulling ahead to lead the 11th lap. Slipping back to third, he regained the second-place spot on a lap-75 restart.
“We had a really good race … we was kind of back-and-forth there and then Jonathan (Davenport) come up there and he drove away and it was just a race there through lapped traffic,” Marlar said. “But me and Brandon (Sheppard) had a good race there. I hate it for him on that restart. He was in a top-three position and lost out.”
Using the race’s lone restart to his advantage, eighth-running Moran made his charge in the final laps, backing up his third-place finish in March’s Indiana Icebreaker.
“Maybe if we’d have had about 10 more laps, it might have been a pretty interesting finish,” Moran said. “I was catching Mikey (Marlar) a little bit, but you’ve got to give credit to (Davenport). He’s had the best Dirt Late Model season of anybody ever. Congrats to them and Mikey and them … that was fun.”
Notes: Davenport scored his 11th Lucas Oil Series victory of the season and 18th victory overall. ... He has won nine races paying $20,000 or more this season. ... Davenport snapped Scott Bloomquist's five-race Lucas Oil winning streak with his first series triumph since Florence Speedway’s North-South 100 on Aug. 8 … The 100-lapper's lone yellow flag flew on lap 75 when Chris Simpson slowed on the racetrack.
