Brian Shirley heads for a $12,000 FALS Frenzy victory.
What won the race: Going around instead of under polesitter Myles Moos, groove-switching Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., took command on the 17th lap Saturday at Fairbury Speedway and went on to complete a sweep of the FALS Frenzy weekend that wrapped up the MARS Championship Series season. Shirley added $12,000 to Friday's $5,000 payday while taking the checkers 0.930 of a second ahead of eighth-starting Tanner English in the 50-lapper. Fifth-finishing Jason Feger wrapped up his second straight MARS title.
Quotable: "It's been almost a dream season for us after how bad the season started," Shirley said. "Definitely a little emotional, it's first race that I've had my whole family literally to come to a race. So it's a pretty proud moment ... I apologize for the messed up interview, but emotions are just pretty rough right now."
Key notes: Emotional in victory lane, Brian Shirley was embraced by many family members after climbing from his car in the infield. ... Winning his fourth tour victory of the season (and third in a row), Shirley's 25 career MARS victories puts him sixth on the all-time list. ... Shirley tried to work under Myles Moos the first 15 laps before switching up and shifting to the outside groove (Shirley made contact with the rear of the Moos car at the top of the backstretch a few laps before his winning pass). ... Moos led 16 laps and ended up eighth aboard the Brent McKinnon-owned No. 26m Rocket. ... Jason Feger was assured his second straight MARS championship when Ryan Unzicker retired with nine laps remaining. ... A single caution slowed the action on lap 30 when provisional starter Justin Duty stopped in turn three. ... Duty was credited with 18th in securing MARS Rookie of the Year honors.
On the move: Frank Heckenast Jr. of Frankfort, Ill., started 16th and finished sixth.
