Singleton wins first RUSH touring event
HAGERSTOWN, Md. (April 20) — Rick Singleton of Huntingdon, Pa., took the lead from Chad McClellan midway through the race for a $2,500 Crate Late Model victory Saturday at Hagerstown Speedway in the first-ever Sweeney Chevrolet-Buick-GMC RUSH Tour event.
The 26-year veteran led the final 18 laps of the Battle Down the National Pike 30-lapper for his first Hagerstown feature victory.
“I love this Crate racing,” Singleton said in victory lane. “This is great racing for the poor guys. This place is awesome. I won a B-main for the Hub City about 15 years ago. That’s the only race I ever won here.”
Glenn Elliott finished second with 12th-starting Mike Pegher Jr., McClellan and 10th-starting Joe Martin rounding out the top five in a race on the undercard of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series.
McClellan and Andrew Satterlee started on the front row with McClellan going to the front while the third-starting Singleton overtook Satterlee on the sixth lap and began to track the lead. He made the winning pass on the 13th lap.
Singleton got into lapped traffic on the 17th lap but had no problems out front while McClellan held the second spot until losing it to Elliott on lap 26. By then, Singleton had stretch his lead comfortably, and he took the checkers with a 2.28-second gap.
“I didn’t know if anyone was behind me or not, “Singleton said. “I was starting to get a little nervous. As long as the lapped traffic holds their line, it’s OK to race with them. It’s just so much fun to show up at a place like Hagerstown Speedway for once in my life and I’ve got the same equipment that everyone else does.”
“I kept looking on the scoreboard,” Elliott said “We gotta be getting close. It seemed like we passed 100 cars. There towards the end, I think the tire, track and car all came together.”
The next RUSH event is scheduled for May 23 at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa.
