Miller outruns Caswell, grabs Utica-Rome victory
VERNON, N.Y. (July 21) — Fourth-starting Rick Miller of Fulton, N.Y., overtook reigning series champion Dale Caswell of Central Square, N.Y., with three laps remaining Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway for a victory on the Go Nuclear Late Model Series.
Miller earned $1,000 for his second victory of the season on the Crate Late Model tour. Caswell settled for second with A.J. Kingsley, 13th-starting Charlie Sandercock and Alan Fink rounding out the top five in the 30-lapper.
Kingsley and Caswell started on the front row with Caswell taking control early. The race’s lone caution appeared for a first-lap spin but Caswell pulled away from the field as Miller worked his way into second by the fourth lap.
Caswell was cruising with a big lead by the ninth lap, but Miller began closing by halfway as the leader hit lapped traffic. Miller closed in on Caswell and took the lead on lap 20, but Caswell regained the point a lap later.
Caswell edged away again but Miller began reeling him again on lap 25. With three laps remaining, Miller made an outside pass and held on the rest of the way.
