Lake, 12, gets RUSH victory at Roaring Knob
MARKLEYSBURG, Pa. (Sept. 2) — At 12 years old, Michael Lake of Unionton, Pa., became the tour’s youngest-ever winner Monday at Roaring Knob Motorsports Complex with a Sweeney Chevrolet-Buick-GMC RUSH Dirt Late Model Series victory worth $2,000. Lake led all 30 laps of the main event after winning his heat race and the dash.
Ryan Montgomery finished second after an apparent pass with 10 laps remaining was negated by the race’s lone caution for Jason Rider’s turn-four spin.
"The yellow helped me,” said Lake, who dedicated to the victory to Sprout Cossell and thanked his grandfather and sponsors. "It's hard with traffic and if they don't move. I got high in turn four and (Montgomery) got a run on me. I ran hard into turn one and got into him. Honestly if the yellow didn't come he would have probably won.”
Mike Pegher Jr. was third followed by fast qualifier Andrew Wylie and Chad McClellan.
The next series event is Sept. 13-14 at Sharon Speedway for the Apple Festival Nationals.
