DeFrance gets asphalt victory after Spaw is DQ'd

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Aug. 6) — Polesitter Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, Iowa, was awarded an IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series victory at Hawkeye Downs Speedway after hometown driver Johnny Spaw was disqualified because an illegal engine. DeFrance had led the first five laps before Spaw took over and crossed the finish line first at the asphalt track for the second straight year. But this time, Spaw was stripped of the victory in the tour's annual foray on asphalt. | Slideshow
DeFrance, making his 328th start in the series, won his second straight series event. Rounding out the top five was Matt Ryan, Terry Neal, Jeff Aikey and Brian Klein. Spaw, who races weekly on asphalt and dirt, was driving a mid-1990s GRT Race Car owned by Dale Stolte.
