Holding the third spot, Woodworth suddenly was thrust into the lead when leader Jesse Stovall of Galena, Mo., blew an engine, then WDRL points leader Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, cut down a right rear tire. Woodworth fought off challenges from Bryant Goldsmith of Corning, Iowa, and had a big enough lead to withstand a late 23rd-to-second rally by Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo. Phillips finished second followed by 12th-starting John Anderson of Omaha, Neb., the MLRA points leader. Alan Vaughn of Belton, Mo., and Larry Clawson of Kansas City, Mo., rounded out the top five.
John Kaanta of Elk Mound, Wis., was sixth, good enough to take the points lead from Simpson, who got back up to 11th after changing his flat tire.
