MUSKOGEE, Okla. (July 10) — After a seven-year hiatus, Late Model racing returned to the Thunderbird Speedway with a hometown hero picking up a victory on the historic half-mile oval. Justin Fulton won at the old Muskogee Motor Speedway on Saturday in Midwest DIRTcar Late Model Series competition.
Greg Skaggs jumped out to an early lead at the start of the 25-lap feature followed by Missouri's Don Cloyd. Fulton moved into the third spot and quickly worked around Cloyd. A quick series of yellows at the start shuffled the running order, allowing dash winner Bryan Sugg to close in as well.
Skaggs and Fulton made contact before the halfway point, with Skaggs bringing out the yellow. Fulton took over the lead with Cloyd and Sugg behind. Fulton pulled away to a big lead while Sugg got past Cloyd for second. As the laps wound down, Sugg slowly started catching Fulton through lapped traffic, but it wasn't enough as Fulton cruised past the stripe with the win, followed by Sugg, Cloyd, Gary Gorby and Dan Leatherman.
Next up for MDLMS competitors is an Aug. 7 event at Minneapolis (Kan.) Raceway.
