Vaught makes his latest $10,000 victory stick
FARLEY, Iowa (July 13) — Will Vaught of Crane, Mo., overtook polesitter Brian Birkhofer exiting turn two following a lap-eight restart and led the rest of the way for a Tornado Tuesday victory at Farley Speedway. The fourth-starting Vaught’s unsanctioned victory at the half-mile oval gave him a career-high $10,000 and a measure of redemption from a big victory that slipped through his fingers to Birkhofer a month earlier. | Slideshow
Birkhofer, of Muscatine, Iowa, led the first eight laps and settled for second while three more Iowa drivers rounded out the top five: outside front-row starter Curt Martin of Independence, third-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, and 11th-starting Jeremiah Hurst of Dubuque. Four cautions slowed the action on laps 6, 8, 11 and 29.
Vaught lost a $10,000 victory June 19 at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, Wis., when he was light at the scales and disqualified, handing the UMP DIRTcar Summernationals victory to the apparent runner-up, Birkhofer.
