Reed joins first-time winner parade at Allison
From series reports
ALLISON, Iowa (May 21) — Justin Reed of Quincy, Ill., added his name to the growing list of first-time tour winners with his midweek run to the checkers in the Deery Brothers Summer Series feature at Highway 3 Raceway. Reed led all 40 laps around the half-mile oval in taking the $2,000 tour victory. Iowans swept the top five spots as Clint Wendel of Mason City followed with a career-best showing of his own in second while Rob Toland of Davenport, Boone McLaughlin of Mediapolis and Matt Strassheim of West Burlington completed the top five.
The fourth straight first-time winner on the series, Reed joins Mike Collins, Andy Nezworski and Denny Woodworth in taking turns atop the podium after Todd Cooney topped the opening night show in early April. The streak of consecutive new winners is the longest since 1987, when the series saw different drivers in victory lane following each of its first six events.
Reed won the first of five heat races, drew the pole start and was not challenged, pulling away from the fast field after both re-starts. The last half of the contest ran caution-free and Reed built an advantage of more than 10 car lengths, catching up to the back of the pack on the white flag circuit.
Two lapped cars separated Reed and Wendel at the checkers. Toland worked his way up from the 14th starting spot and bested McLaughlin and Strassheim in the tussle for third. Reed’s previous best Deery finish had been second, in the April 29 show at 34 Raceway. Wendel’s best run had been fourth, in the tour event at Allison last May.
Notes: The sixth of 17 stops on the 2008 schedule takes the Deery Series to Boone Speedway for its traditional Memorial Day show on May 26. ... Todd Cooney finished 15th at Allison and will take a two-point edge over McLaughlin and Tom Darbyshire to Boone.
