Aukland earns $5,000 with IRS victory at Tyler

MIDDLEBOURNE, W.Va. (July 12) — Reigning series champion Rick Aukland of Zanesville, Ohio, overtook polesitter Butch McGill of West Union, W.Va., on the 16th of 50 laps and led the rest of the Independent Racing Series event to earn $5,000. Aukland, who started third, became the eighth different winner on the IRS tour with his victory in the fifth annual Eaton-Childers King of the Ring Memorial at the third-mile oval.
Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., who skipped the previous night's IRS event in Bedford, Pa., finished second followed by Paul Wilmoth Jr. of Clarksburg, W.Va. Steve Shaver of Vienna, W.Va., who started outside the front row, was fourth, one spot ahead of Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio.
Notes: Aukland's MasterSbilt Race Car has a Malcuit engine and sponsorship from K&E Trucking and Chase Race Decals. ... The race was slowed by four cautions, the most serious for a turn-four wreck when IRS points leader Robbie Blair, Doug Horton and Donnie Dotson tanged. The cars of Blair and Horton had to be pulled apart following the skirmish. ... Joel Prosser won the track's Crate feature as Sonny Conley was penalized for aggressive driving in their turn-four battle heading for the checkered flag. ... The IRS tour heads to the Stateline Speedway in Busti, NY for a $5,000-to-win event on July 19.
