May 25, 2009, 11:59 am
From track reports

BEDFORD, Pa. (May 24) — Outdueling polesitter Jeff Rine for the lead on the first lap, hometown driver Jack Pencil took command and led all the way at Bedford Speedway for a $3,000 victory on the first-year Three State Flyers tour.

Pencil, notching his second victory of the season at the half-mile oval, stretched his lead on virtually every restart in racing to the checkered flag. Rine, Danville, Pa., settled for second while Mike Altobelli of Saxton, Pa., was third. Steve Everhart of Canoe Creek, Pa., and Dylan Yoder of Selinsgrove, Pa., rounded out the top five as the Three State Flyers capped a three-race Memorial Day weekend.

Jim Yoder of Selinsgrove and Scott Haus of Hamburg, Pa., were battling for second when they clashed heading into turn one; both cars slid to the top of the track and fell from contention.

Notes: Pencil's Rocket Chassis is sponsored by R.L. Insulation and Abatement. ... The 45-year-old Pencil's race team was devastated by a March 20 fire, but he's been driving a car salvaged from the fire tabbed "Survivor." ... Wayne Johnson slowed to draw a lap-four caution. ... The top 18 cars finished on the lead lap. ... Twenty of 16 starters were running at the finish. ... The next Late Model special at Bedford is June 12, the finale of the seven-race Appalachian Mountain Dirt Late Model Speedweek. The winner earns $5,000. ... The Three State Flyers take a break until June 19-20 action at Hagerstown (Md.) Speedway and Winchester (Va.) Speedway for a pair of $4,000-to-win events.
