Briggs outduels Coffey, sweeps McKean County
EAST SMETHPORT, Pa. (Sept. 22) — Reigning series champion Boom Briggs of Bear Lake, Pa., overtook Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y., at the white flag in Sunday’s NDRL's ULMS Racing Series feature at McKean County Raceway and earned $5,000 in completing a sweep of the third-mile oval’s eighth annual Fall Classic weekend.
Briggs' victory in the RaceFan 50, which came in an event postponed one day by a Saturday rainout, pushed his total weekend earnings to $8,000 after he also earned a $3,000 ULMS victory in the weekend opener on Friday. | Slideshow
Coffey, held up by the lapped car of Chris Hackett on the frontstretch that alllowed Briggs to sweep by, settled for second at the finish with Dick Barton of Ashville, N.Y., third. Billy Decker of Unadilla, N.Y., and Rob Blair of Centerville, Pa., were fourth and fifth respectively.
Notes: Briggs drives a Rocket Chassis with sponsorship from Meridien Hardwoods, Sorbera Family Chiropractic, Horton Equipment, Asel Enterprises, and Tony L. Stec Lumber. ... The winner's purse was lowered from $7,500 to $5,000 because of the schedule adjustment. ... Two rounds of time trials were completed on Thursday to set heat lineups for Friday and Sunday; Davey Johnson topped the charts for Friday's program while Dylan Yoder was fastest in Sunday's qualifying round. ... Max Blair pocketed $2,000 in the RUSH Crate Late Model portion of the program. ... McKean County hosted the series for the final time this season. ...
