Streaking Boggs rolls to first Harvest 50 victory
By Scott Wolfe
Skyline SpeedwaySTEWART, Ohio (Sept. 28) — Jackie Boggs has had a September to remember. The veteran racer from Grayson, Ky., claimed another special event trophy Saturday night at Skyline Speedway’s Harvest 50, earning $5,000 for his third victory in as many weeks.
Boggs, who won 201 Speedway’s Roger Breeding Memorial on Sept. 22 and the first leg of Brushcreek Motorsports Complex’s American Heritage Classic on Sept. 14, pushed his total from race’s won this month to $20,000 in topping Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., and Steve Shaver of Vienna, W.Va., in Saturday’s unsanctioned 50-lapper. Zach Dohm, the runner-up’s son, was fourth with Corey Conley of Wellsburg, W.Va., rounding out the top five.
Boggs, who returned to Skyline after a lengthy absence, played the tire game to perfection. He came on strong in the second half of the race to outduel Dohm en route to his seventh victory of $5,000 or more this season.
“I like this place. I hadn't been here for a while and it was good to come up here and win,” said Boggs, who won the popular late season event for the first time in his career. “It was just a matter of being really smart. The track looked wet but it really wasn't. It was really slick and hard to figure out. I think we made the right tire choice and just held on.”
Dohm was denied what would’ve been his first Harvest 50 trophy after soft-compound tires slowed him in the race’s late stages.
“I went softer on tire compound than anyone else and the car really took off in the beginning,” Dohm said. “My tires made it 30 laps, but we needed them for 50.”
Shaver was looking for his seventh Harvest 50 victory but came up short after being slowed by lapped traffic.
“I was good the latter part of the race and thought I had a good race car all night,” said Shaver, who first won the event in 1992 and most recently won in 2007. “I just couldn't get the traffic going in my favor. Every time I made a run, a car would be in my groove, but that's racin’ ... those guys are racing for position too.”
