Richards earns $5,000 in Portsmouth cruise

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (July 6) — Third-starting Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., took the lead from R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, on the fifth lap at Portsmouth Raceway Park and cruised to victory in the Weaver Gas & Oil Independence Day 50, a race postponed two days by rain. Richards earned $5,000 for the victory a day after Eddie Carrier Jr.'s $10,000 MACS triumph at PRP
R.J. Conley, who started outside the front row, settled for second ahead of Michael England of Glasgow, Ky., the 10th-starting Carrier and Rod Conley, the runner-up's brother. MACS points leader Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., finished sixth and polesitter Kenny Christy was 22nd. The race was slowed by six cautions, none for serious incidents.
Notes: Richards drove the Ernie Davis-owned No. 25 Rocket Chassis powered by a Cornett Thunder engine and sponsored by Ernie’s Salvage. ... Richards was the only driver to crack the 16-second mark in time trials. ... The next MACS event is scheduled for Aug. 9 at Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, Va., where the $10,000-to-win USA 100 which is co-sanctioned by the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series.
