Death overshadows MSCC race at Columbus
From track and (Columbus) Commercial-Dispatch reports
COLUMBUS, Miss. (Oct. 10) — Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., grabbed his series-high fifth Mississippi State Championship Challenge victory of the season just a few hours before tragedy struck at Columbus Speedway. McCool's $2,500 victory was overshadowed when Carl Thomas McReynolds was killed after flipping his personal pickup truck on the racetrack in turn three.
McReynolds, 20, was the son of the track's 2006 Crate Late Model champion Thomas McReynolds and dabbled in racing in the modified division. He was known as "Little Thomas." David Breazeale of Four Corners, Miss., who finished second in the MSCC feature, was a passenger in the pickup but was treated at a local hospital and released with non-life threatening injuries, Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant said.
Racing ended about 12:30 a.m. but McReynolds and Breazeale pulled onto the unlit track about 2:30 a.m. The truck flipped and rolled in turn three and McReynolds was ejected and fatally injured. It was the first fatality in the track's 48-year history, the coroner said.
