Burroughs tops Shirley for Green Valley victory

GLENCOE, Ala. (May 28) — Anthony Burroughs of Muscle Shoals, Ala., took the lead on the 15th lap Saturday at Green Valley Speedway and raced to his first victory of the season on the Southern Regional Racing Series. Bo Shirley of nearby Gadsden, Ala., got the jump on polesitter Josh Putnam of Killen, Ala., at the outset and stayed in command through the first 14 laps. But one lap after Burroughs took the lead, Shirley got into the unforgiving concrete wall and fell out of the race.
Putnam took up the chase of Burroughs but settled for second at the 3/8-mile oval while Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., was third in a banged-up car. Jacob Grizzle of Blairsville, Ga., and Brian Smith of Sand Rock, Ala., rounded out the top five in the second of two Memorial Day weekend races for SRRS drivers.
Johnson's car suffered heavy right-side damage on the fourth lap when Stacy Holmes of Munford, Ala., spun, causing a scramble that involved several cars.
Notes: Burroughs drives a Barry Wright Race Car sponsored by PMC Enterprises and World Venture Travel, which is sponsoring trip giveaways this season ... The track auctioned rides in a two-seater Late Model, raising more than $3,000 that will go to help victims of last month's storms and tornadoes that raked Alabama. Burroughs, Ronnie Johnson, Tom Maddox, Montana Dudley, Stacy Holmes, Bo shirley and Kayne Hickman were among drivers piloting the two-seater. ... SRRS competitors return to action June 17-18 with a Kentucky doubleheader at Clinton County Speedway in Alpha and Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown.
