Whitener holds off Eiland at East Alabama

PHENIX CITY, Ala. (April 19) — Polesitter Mark Whitener of Middleburg, FLa., took the lead from fellow front-row starter Jay Johnson at East Alabama Motor Speedway and led the rest of the way for a United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series victory worth $4,000. Hometown veteran Dana Eiland pressured Whitener before settling for second while Johnny Collins of Jacksonville, Fla., finished third ahead of Keith Nosbisch of Valrico, Fla. Shan Smith's 14th-to-fifth run put the Dade City, Fla., driver into the points lead on the first-year tour. | April recaps
Notes: Evan Becton was the top finishing rookie in 15th. ... East Alabama's next special event is a $1,500-to-win Top Tracks Challenge race for Crate Late Models on July 4. ... UDLMCS returns to East Bay Raceway Park in Gibsonton, Fla., on April 26 to complete the April 5 event that was curtailed by rain. The series plans a 20-lap qualifier to transfer more cars into the 40-lap feature, which will pay $3,000 to the winner.
