Up from 19th, Wilmoth grabs $5,000 at Tyler
MIDDLEBOURNE, W.Va. (July 24) — Paul Wilmoth Jr. of Clarksburg, W.Va., overtook Chris Garnes of Evans, W.Va., on a lap-33 restart to capture the Eaton-Childers King of the Ring at Tyler County Speedway. Wilmoth, who rallied from his 19th starting spot after winning the consolation race, earned $5,000 for the unsanctioned victory.
Jeff Burdette of Parkersburg finished second in the all-West Virginia top five followed by Corey Conley of Wellsburg, Steve Wilmoth of Clarksburg and Butch McGill of West Union.
Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., led at the outset, but a flat right rear tire knocked him from contention and Robbie Scott of Shinnston, W.Va., took command on the fourth lap.
After Billy Brown’s lap-six spin, Scott led Steve Wilmoth and McGill back to the green. Jacob Hawkins moved from fifth to second over the next six laps and began to close in on Scott before another Brown spin on lap 19.
Scott continued to lead Hawkins up front, but Paul Wilmoth was making his move, cracking the top five on the 23rd lap and moving into third before a lap-33 caution for Steve Weigle in turn four.
The Scott-Hawkins battled heated up on the restart, and the frontrunners made contact exiting turn two on lap 36. Scott ended up sideways on the backchute and Tony Roush slammed the driver’s side of Scott’s car. Scott was checked out at the ambulance while Hawkins was sent to the tail for his part in the caution.
Garnes inherited the lead, but Paul Wilmoth took command on the restart and led the remaining caution-free laps for his fourth victory at Tyler County this season.
