Whitwell wins Aztec's weekend opener

AZTEC, N.M. (Aug. 31) — Polesitter R.C. Whitwell of Tucson, Ariz., added to his points lead on the Championship Dirt Motorsports Super Late Model Series presented by Indy Screen Print, earning his fourth series victory of the season Saturday at Aztec Speedway.
Second-starting Scott Lewis of Henderson, Co., lead the first eight laps before the top groove went away and Whitwell took the lead and never looked back on his way to claiming the first leg of the tour’s doubleheader weekend at Aztec’s third-mile oval.
Garrett Alberson of Las Cruces, N.M., passed John Hansen of Brush, Co., coming to the checkers to claim the runner-up finish. Bumper Jones of Mesilla Park, N.M., and Dave Garmann of Brighton, Co., rounded out the top five. Lewis faded to sixth at the finish.
Aztec hosts Championships Dirt Motorsports competitors again Sunday for a $2,500-to-win event.
