Reviewing the Bubba Army Winternationals at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla., where the World of Outlaws Late Model Series ran three weekend races, including the $20,000-to-win event that was the richest of Florida Speedweeks:

Best driver: Tossup between Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., and Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky. Lanigan was the class of the field in winning the first two events, but Richards finally capitalized on his always-fast Rocket Chassis house car to capture the $20,000 finale.

TUCSON, Ariz. — Superlatives from the inaugural Winter Extreme, where nearly 60 Late Model drivers competed in the six-race miniseries at Tucson International Raceway from Jan. 12-20 (with an assist from fellow Arizona observers):

Best race: Several shows had some late-race drama, but Tim Fuller’s victory in the opener featured three lead changes in the final six laps. Brad Looney led most of the race before spinning out of contention with help from Jimmy Mars, who then pushed high on a MORE

Now that’s what I’m talking about.

For those of us relatively underwhelmed by Eldora Speedway’s tweaks to its major Dirt Late Model events this season, changes for 2013 announced this week — including nearly $200,000 in total purses added for the Dream and World 100 and the addition of a third night of racing for both races — are much more satisfying.

If 2012’s changes were window dressing, next season’s plans are closer to a full remodeling of the lucrative races at the historic MORE
