With the new Pro Crate Racers of America tour set to kick off its inaugural season this weekend and the Go Nuclear Late Model Challenge Series following suit later in the year, I guess this is as good of a time as any to bring up the subject of crate engines in Dirt Late Model racing.

I know it’s a subject that’s been beaten to death over the past few years, but since nearly everyone else seems to have an opinion on the matter, I might as well throw mine out there as well.

Something that has always amazed me about Dirt Late Model racing is how unpredictable entry lists can be, especially when it comes to regional races.

While some regional events struggle to even attract a full field, others can draw healthy car counts that even include some big-name drivers, especially when schedules and rainouts work in their favor.

After a nasty and cold winter pounded most of the country, things have finally began to warm up slightly as the 2011 racing has begun to get a foothold in the southern half of the country.

While rain has washed out its fair share of races over the past month, cold weather really hasn’t been a concern for us Southerners. Unseasonably warm temperatures have greeted us as we have made our way to races like the Bama Bash and the Modoc 100.
