Barnett undergoing back surgery
Four-time Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway Late Model champion Steve Barnett is set to undergo surgery Sunday afternoon after suffering a serious back injury in a Saturday night heat race accident at the quarter-mile oval, according to his daughter Mindi Barnett Paris. | Video
Barnett’s injuries, treated at an Indianapolis hospital after he was airlifted Saturday evening, include a T-5 vertebra fracture but he didn’t sustain any spinal cord damage, she wrote in a Facebook post.
“He will be getting some plates and screws in that (T-5) area today,” Mindi Barnett Paris wrote. “They said he should make a full recovery and hopefully walk out of here in a couple days.”
The family thanks everyone for thoughts and prayers for Barnett, a Brownstown Speedway Hall of Famer and at-large member of the Franklin City Council.
Franklin Mayor Joe McGuinness visited the hospital Saturday night and the family has received calls and message from other council members, family, friends and former racing partner Tony Stewart.
