North Florida assisting firefighters
North Florida Speedway in Lake City will collect donations to support those fighting south Georgia wildfires before Saturday’s racing, the track announced.
With Lake City’s Gateway Airport serving as a staging area for tankers and other aircraft fighting fires at Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, track owners Phil and Liz Guadagno are asking race teams and fans to bring donations to Saturday’s race program that includes Limited Late Models.
"This is a way the NFS family can show support for the hundreds of crews fighting that fire at every level," Phil Guadagno said. "If it's something like just donating cases of water and Powerade, we are glad to help and hope we can do more.”
Items that can be donated include water, sports drinks, light weight work gloves, nasal spray, Germ X or sanitizer, bug spray, cheap flip flops, AA batteries, Gold Bond body powder, individual Tylenol or pain reliever packs.
Fans, race teams and track officials can drop off donations by the front ticket gate. Most donations will be taken to Gateway Airport., where the U.S. Forestry Tanker Base is supplying fire retardant chemicals for tankers.
