Boland gets NeSmith's Cross award
Veteran racer and Trak-Star Race Cars founder Mike Boland of Cuba, Ala., was honored with the Chevrolet Performance Bob Cross Memorial Lifetime Achievement award during Saturday’s NeSmith Racing banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum in Dawsonville, Ga.
The 59-year-old Boland, a seven-time Mississippi state champion who began his Trak-Star chassis business in 2005 at his Boland Performance shop, on the same night accepted honors as the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Chassis Manufacturers Challenge Championship for the seventh time and fourth straight season.
Boland, who has hundreds of feature victories over a 38-year career, was honored on a night when the top 10 drivers in NeSmith’s touring and weekly divisions accepted their 2017 awards and prize money.
Among other awards, the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Promoter of the Year award went to Jerry and Mitzi Russell of Camden (Tenn.) Speedway. The award recognizes a track promoter that excels in working with competitors, fans, sponsors and in an administrative role with the series.
