Fire keeps Southern Ontario oval dark
Southern Ontario Motor Speedway in Merlin, Ontario, has cancelled weekend action after a Wednesday fire destroyed the track’s main tower and damaged the concessions area, according to a report from the Chatham-Kent Sports Network.
Track officials are still assessing the fire that kept fire and police crews at the track most of Wednesday. No damage estimate was available but no injuries were reported at the track, which operates on Saturdays and was formerly called South Buxton Raceway.
“We are so upset to have to cancel the racing events for this weekend,” the track posted on Facebook. “Please understand that if there was anyway we could be ready we would. However, that is not the case and we need to ensure safety for everybody, too. All practices and racing are cancelled for this week. We will update you on any further information as we have available.”
