Storm-wary Georgia ovals cancel races
With the region bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Dorian, two south Georgia tracks cancelled upcoming events on the Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series. The Sept. 6 event at Savannah's Oglethorpe Speedway Park and Sept. 7 event at Sylvania's Screven Motor Speedway won't be rescheduled.
“The hurricane path and destruction leaves is just so unpredictable," Screven promoter Redd Griffin said. "And while this area could get lucky, other areas around us won’t. We have been through this same thing in years past and even without sustaining much damage of our own, so many of our neighbors and fans were hit hard."
The cancellations leave the Southern All Stars with two more September events. I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn., hosts a $4,000-to-win event on Sept. 21 and Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn., hosts a $7,500-to-win event on Sept. 28. Visit sasdirt.com for more series details.
