IMCA racer dies after ‘medical emergency’
Shaune Lewis, an IMCA Late Model racer at Davenport (Iowa) Speedway, died during Thursday's racing program at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds oval of an apparent medical issue. The boys’ basketball coach at Kewanee (Ill.) High School was 47.
His death was first reported by the Oskaloosa, Iowa-based DIRT N Asphalt racing podcast Thursday night, saying Lewis "had a medical emergency during his heat race" and died. Social media posts from participants and spectators, as well as Lewis's son and nephew, mourned his passing.
"There will be no Late Model feature tonight in respect for the 44x," driver Justin Kay tweeted. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to their family."
Race promoters Ricky and Brenda Kay, the parents of Justin Kay, didn't want to comment or provide any information when contacted by DirtonDirt.com.
Lewis, the head coach at Kewanee since 2015, also operated Lewis Auto Body, according to Kewanee's Star Courier.
