Concussion ends Lanigan's weekend
Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., suffered a concussion in a heat-race accident Wednesday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., forcing him to scratch from the remainder of the World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series-sanctioned Last Call opener and withdraw from Thursday’s program. | RaceWire
A three-time WoO champion, Lanigan was involved in an opening-lap scrape with another competitor in Wednesday’s first heat that sent him spinning in turn three. Damage to his Viper Motorsports-fielded Barry Wright Race Cars house car’s nosepiece in the incident contributed to him losing control of the vehicle in turn four on the fifth lap and spinning into the outside concrete wall, which he hit with the left side of his car.
Lanigan complained of a headache after returning to his trailer and safety team members recommended that he make a precautionary trip to a local hospital. He agreed and underwent testing and observation before being released.
“Got my head rattled (and a) concussion but no (brain) bleeding,” Lanigan, 50, told DirtonDirt.com on Thursday morning before leaving the track.
Lanigan entered the doubleheader ranked fourth in the WoO points standings but fell to fifth after not starting the feature. As a WoO regular he will receive hardship points for missing Thursday’s program, but it appears he will slip to sixth in the final standings.
