What won the race: After retaking the lead from Josh Rice with six laps remaining, R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, held off Jared Hawkins to win Saturday’s 12th annual Dan Reno Memorial at Atomic Speedway. Conley finished 1.720 seconds ahead of Hawkins for his first win of the season while earning $3,022.
Key notes: R.J. Conley recorded his fifth top-five of the season and first victory. … Conley went back in front when Josh Rice of Verona, Ky., pitted with a faulty water hose. … Rice had rallied from the tail of the field and into the lead after he was sent to the back following contact with fast qualifier Freddie Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., on lap six. Carpenter, who won Atomic’s Buckeye 30 on Aug. 8, went for a wild flip in turn two after making contact with Rice as the two battled for second. Carpenter was sore but apparently not seriously injured. … Atomic points leader Steve Casebolt of Richmond, Ind., a two-time special event winner at the Chillicothe, Ohio, oval this season, finished ninth after contact with Rice resulted in Casebolt being sent to the tail. … Tyler Carpenter was fifth fastest qualifier but lost a motor on his second qualifying lap. … Atomic recently added a $10,000-to-win special on Sept. 12
On the move: Todd Brennan of Zanesville, Ohio, started 20th and started fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Conley's Draime-powered Rocket is sponsored by Conley Trucking, Conley River Terminal, Dave Poske's Performance Parts and Shane Custom Decals.
Points chase: Heading into the weekend, Steve Casebolt of Richmond, Ind., was atop Atomic’s standings.
