Dale McDowell gets rolling before completing his weekend sweep.
What won the race: Completing the weekend sweep with the Southern All Star Series, second-starting Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., dominated Saturday night’s King of the Mountain Championship finale at Smoky Mountain Speedway to capture $7,000. He finished ahead of Ricky Weiss and Sam Seawright to record his 44th career SAS victory.
Quotable: "I was really surprised," McDowell said of Ashton Winger's unsuccessful slide-job attempt for the lead. "If it would've stuck, it would've been an awesome move. He just carried an awful lot of speed into that corner and my hat was going to be off to him if he could carry that much speed off and stick. Those young guys make it exciting."
Key notes: McDowell captured all four of his 2020 Southern All Star starts. ... After sneaking past polesitter Ashton Winger early in the 50-lapper, McDowell survived a slider from Winger following a mid-race restart to regain command of the top spot. … Winger his the wall on his move and damage took him out of the race, collecting Dakotah Knuckles and Austin Smith. ... Third-starting Zach Leonhardi of Cartersville, Ga., discovered motor issues before that start of the feature that forced him to complete a few laps before pulling in. … The Southern All Stars visited Smoky Mountain Speedway for the second night of a doubleheader at the Maryville, Tenn., oval. … Friday’s feature paid $3,000-to-win, while Saturday’s feature, which is the season finale for both the track and the series, paid $7,000-to-win. … Saturday’s marks the tour’s 34th visit to Smoky Mountain. … Eli Beets of Knoxville, Tenn., pocketed $2,000 for winning the American Crate All-Star Series feature over Cameron Weaver.
Winner's sponsors: McDowell’s Bloomquist Race Car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by E-Z-Go, New Era Industrial, Quality Natural Gas, Will Kinzer Foundation, Cometic Gasket and Klotz Lubricants.
