G.R. Smith notched his third career Southern All Stars win on March 12 at Southern Raceway.
What won the race: Muscling his way past race-long pacesetter Joseph Joiner in the final 10 laps, G.R. Smith of Cornelius, N.C., recorded his third career Southern All Star Series victory in Friday night’s Spring Break Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. He claimed $3,000.
Quotable: "I slid him one time and I cleared him and then he kind of knew where to go protect that line," Smith said of the battle with Joiner. "I was getting such a good run and saw him getting free ... I tried to get in there and I got on the binders, but it was just one of them racing deals."
Key notes: Polesitter Joseph Joiner jumped out to a commanding lead early but contact between Joiner and Smith in turns three and four elevated Smith into the lead. … Dean Carpenter of Coldwater, Miss., was reportedly uninjured after a lap 16 melee left him on his roof. … The Southern All Star Series visited Southern Raceway for its second and third events of the season. … The doubleheader weekend concludes with a $5,000-to-win, 50-lap feature on Saturday. … The tour is scheduled to return to Southern on Nov. 12-13.
