What won the race: Zack Mitchell of Enoree, S.C., ran unchallenged 40 laps Tuesday at Laurens County Speedway for a $4,000 victory on the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series. Mitchell took the checkers 2.602 seconds ahead of runner-up Trent Ivey in the 40th annual Shrine Race.
Quotable: “We just didn’t get too far out of our box,” Mitchell said. “We barely adjusted on this thing all night and (it seems) like that’s the best we’ve been when we just keep our head screwed on right and stay inside of our tuning box. I was just trying to bide my time right there whenever I could get past the lapped cars … I never tried to press the issue too much. The car was flawless tonight."
Key notes: Mitchell picked up his second Carolina Clash victory of the season and 10th of his career. ... The 2017 series champion started on the front row alongside fast qualifier Payton Freeman, who ended up fourth. ... Runner-up Trent Ivey took the second spot from Freeman on the 27th lap with a turn-three pass. ... Eight drivers finished on the lead lap. ... NASCAR driver David Ragan was on hand with his show car and memorabilia. ... Proceeds from the event go to the Greenville Shriners Hospital for Children. … The series was mourning the recent deaths of Billy Cagle, who operated a race shop in Hopkins, S.C., and Denah Long, the wife of former Fayetteville (N.C.) Motor Speedway promoter Jim Long.
On the move: Jeff Smith of Dallas, N.C., started 11th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Mitchell’s Barry Wright Race Cars house car is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by Service Transport, Clary Hood Inc., Eubanks Oil Company, Draco Springs, Charles West Grading, Base Racing Fuel and Oil, C&H Paving, Bilstein Shocks, Nichols Plumbing and ATC Site Construction.
