Brian Shirley notched his first feature victory of 2022.
What won the race: Slipping past Max Blair in lapped traffic, Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., took command at the flagstand on lap 32 and led the rest of Sunday's 40-lap DIRTcar Summer Nationals feature at Sycamore Speedway. The third-starting Shirley, a four-time tour champion, took the checkers 1.334 seconds ahead of Blair for his first tour victory of 2022.
Quotable: "You know, we got lucky there," Shirley said. "(The track) ended up starting to latch down a little bit. We had a pretty good car, but (Blair) just got hung up behind that lapped car a little bit. We took advantage of it and had a pretty good car and was able to walk away with the win."
Key notes: Shirley notched his first victory of any kind in 2022. ... Shirley has 36 career tour victories, including the last two series events at Sycamore. ... Polesitter Payton Freeman led the first nine laps and Max Blair led laps 10-31. ... Ten cautions slowed the action, including a first-lap pileup in turn three with Doug Tye, Logan Martin, Bob Gardner and Greg Cantrell involved. ... Other cautions: The first two attempted starts were called back (no drivers were penalized); Bob Gardner slowed on lap 10; Tye spun on lap 13 then slowed on lap 17; Mike Spatola's lap-19 spin; and Mark Voigt's lap-21 spin after contact with Martin; Cantrell's lap-35 flat tire; and finally fast qualifier Dale Markham's lap-36 spin. ... Sycamore, about an hour west of Chicago, hosted its sixth series event and Shirley is the lone driver with more than one victory.
On the move: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., started 16th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Shirley’s Bob Cullen Racing Rocket Chassis is powered by an Andy Durham Racing Engine and sponsored by Thomason Express, Hoker Trucking, J&J Ventures Gaming, Kid’s Castle Learning Center, KBC Graphics, Cheap Cars, Bass Livestock Nutrition, Allgaier Motorsports, East Central Coin, Cheers and Integra Shocks.
Who to watch: Summer Nationals upstart Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, chases a third win of 2022.
Points chase: After Sycamore: 1. Bobby Pierce (404): 2. Ryan Unzicker (400); 3. Dennis Erb Jr. (381); 4. Jason Feger (376); 5. Brian Shirley (362); 6. Payton Freeman (284); 7. Logan Martin (277); 8. Joe Godsey (264); 9. Bob Gardner (252); 10. Preston Luckman (220).
