Jason Feger heads to a $5,000 payday at Macon Speedway.
What won the race: Taking the lead Thursday with an outside move on lap 39 at Macon Speedway, eighth-starting Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., paced the final 62 laps at the fifth-mile oval to capture the 56-day postponed 42nd annual Herald & Review 100 feature. The $5,000 victory, his first in Macon's longest-running event, marks the 23rd of Feger's career with the DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour in the non-points makeup race.
Quotable: “This race, to me, means as much as it always has,” Feger said. “I’ve been coming here for a long time. I think I won a couple of these when I was helping (two-time winner) Billy Drake back in the day. I’ve just always wanted to get this one bad for some reason. We’ve won races here, just never the Herald & Review. To finally be able to pull it off feels great.”
Key notes: Feger notched his sixth victory of the season and third in three weeks. ... Rusty Schlenk led laps 2-38 before giving way to Feger and spinning on lap 50 with a flat tire. Schlenk rallied back to fourth before spinning again and retiring on lap 85 in 10th. ... Moving into the runner-up position on lap 76, ninth-starting Rusty Griffaw finished 2.682 seconds behind Feger for his best career DIRTcar Summer Nationals finish (he was third at Belle-Clair Speedway in 2016). ... Jayme Zidar ran third the final nine laps. ... Fast qualifier Myles Moos battled Griffaw for second place in the second half and settled for fourth. ... Polesitter Jake Little of Springfield, Ill., led the first lap; he finished fifth. ... Fourth-starting Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., was collected in a multicar incident on lap nine and was unable to continue, finishing 16th. ... Aussie Paul Stubber finished 20th after a rollover wreck on a lap-five restart attempt, causing a 10-minute red flag; no injuries were reported. ... Five-time Herald & Review 100 winner Shannon Babb quickly moved into second place before suffering mechanical problems on lap three, ending his night. ... Thursday's feature, the 42nd annual edition of the Herald & Review 100, was slowed by 12 cautions and lasted 55 minutes with six competitors completing 100 laps.
On the move: Greg Kimmons of Pleasant Plains, Ill., started 22nd and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Feger’s Longhorn Chassis has a Pro Power engine with sponsorship from Titan Industries, Hoker Trucking, Floyd’s Waste Systems, Digital Copy Systems, RLM Enterprises, Rosser Battery, Remtek Enterprises, Speedwerx, Cheap Cars and Griffin Signs.
Points chase: Final DIRTcar Summer Nationals points: 1. Bobby Pierce (1,306); 2. Payton Freeman (1,127); 3. Joe Godsey (1,048); 4. Brian Shirley (1,001); 5. Jason Feger (895); 6. Mark Voigt (834); 7. Billy Moyer Jr. (832); 8. Jeff Roth (745); 9. Mick Quin (687); 10. Paul Stubber (646).
