Logan Martin won for the first time on the Summer Nationals.
What won the race: Outside front-row starter Logan Martin of West Plains, Mo., led all 40 laps Tuesday at Springfield Raceway, cruising to his first career victory on the DIRTcar Summer Nationals. Martin, who pulled into victory lane with a flat right-rear tire, earned $5,000 for his second overall victory of the season.
Quotable: “It’s so rewarding, the tour is so tough, I mean great competition all the way back,” Martin said. “It makes it even more rewarding winning here at Springfield Raceway. I love this place, all those fans up there, they’re awesome. I cut my teeth here growing up, I raced (modifieds) here, ya know I did a lot of racing here growing up and it’s awesome to get my first one and to get it here at Springfield is even more special. I was trying to be easy on (my tires), I seen guys going down, I mean we got a right-rear flat right now, so not much longer and we were gonna be in one.”
Key notes: Regaining the runner-up spot from Ashton Winger on a lap-25 restart, Billy Moyer Jr. trailed Martin the rest of the way, finishing 1.421 seconds back. ... Martin is the tour’s second first-time winner in 2023, matching Stormy Scott. It’s the first time since 2015 there’ve been two first-time winners in the first 11 races (Frank Heckenast Jr. and Levi Kissinger did it eight years ago). ... Winger jumped the turn-three cushion on lap 11 and left the track surface running third, but the race's first caution was credited to Payton Looney just prior to Winger's mishap, allowing him to retain his spot. ... Drake Troutman sustained a flat left-rear tire while running fourth on lap 11 and ended up eighth. ... Tyler Clem was 10th after a late flat. ... Seventh-running Tony Jackson Jr. was forced to change a flat during the race's final caution on lap 30 and settled for 16th, the last car on the lead lap. ... Tuesday's feature was slowed by four cautions and lasted 29 minutes, with 16 drivers completing the entire distance.
On the move: Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Mo., started 15th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Martin’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Adams Construction, AIM Services, Hughes Towing LLC, Mr. Dent Collision Repair, Southern Hills Auto Plaza, Midwest Sheet Metal, MSM Fab, PPG Paints, Integra Shocks and Schoenfeld Headers.
