Mike Marlar celebrates after grabbing Thursday's World of Outlaws win at Red River Valley.
What won the race: Inheriting the point when race-long leader Ryan Gustin sustained a flat right-rear tire during a lap-27 caution, fifth-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., paced the final 13 circuits to win Thursday's $10,000 Titan Machinery Showdown at Red River Valley Speedway. Marlar notched his sixth overall victory of the season and the 14th of his career with the World of Outlaws Case Late Models.
Quotable: “The track was just way more aggressive than I anticipated," Marlar said. "We ran the heat and it was ‘get it on’ and just before the feature, just for extra precaution, I put on a few extra tearoffs and I just about run out. I don’t know where all the mud kept coming from, it was like hard and slick when we started and wide-open after that."
Key notes: Slipping to fourth early, Tanner English regained the runner-up position on the lap-28 restart and trailed Marlar the rest of the way, finishing 1.286 seconds back. ... Polesitter Ryan Gustin finished ninth after after changing his flat tire. ... Ninth-starting Kyle Bronson muscled his way by 12th-starting Bobby Pierce in the closing laps in a contentious battle that continued on the cool-down lap. ... Fifteenth-starting Brian Shirley took fourth from Pierce on lap 38. ... Shane Clanton overcame a flat tire in his heat race, advancing 15 positions to finish seventh. ... Making a rare Late Model start, sprint car standout Donny Schatz gained eight spots and finished 11th. ... Tyler Peterson started 17th and finished 12th in his WoO debut. ... After lowering the track record in time trials, Cade Dillard sustained heavy nose damage on lap 14 and finished 14th. ... Chris Madden drew the race's final caution when he suffered nose damage and retired on lap 27. ... Nick Hoffman tangled with Dustin Walker on the opening lap and suffered heavy nose damage, ending his night. ... Thursday's feature, postponed 24 hours by rain, was slowed by five cautions and lasted 28 minutes, with 15 drivers completing 40 laps.
On the move: Shane Clanton of Zebulon, Ga., started 22nd and finished seventh.
