Jimmy Owens grabbed a $10,000 victory in Senoia, Ga.
What won the race: Fourth-starting Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., used the high line to take the lead on a lap-16 restart and survived several late cautions to capture Saturday's 50-lap Independence Shootout at Senoia Raceway. He earned $10,000 for his first victory of the season — and first driving for Koehler Motorsports — in the event co-sanctioned by the Ultimate Southeast Super Late Model Series and Hunt the Front Super Dirt Series.
Quotable: “We’ve been up and down all year you know, not having near the runs we’ve wanted to,” Owens said. “It’s great to come down here. The track’s a little slicker and racy, and you know, I'm just glad to get a win for the Koehler Motorsports guys and I can’t thank them enough. It was a good night. Maybe we can get a little better and get a little more consistent.”
Key notes: Owens won in his first-ever Hunt the Front start. ... He has two career Ultimate Southeast victories. ... His best previous 2023 finish in a full-field feature was fifth, twice in Lucas Oil Series action. ... Seventh-starting Carson Ferguson made an outside pass to grab the runner-up position on a lap-39 restart and trailed Owens the rest of the way, finishing 1.118 seconds back. ... Pearson Lee Williams advanced 12 positions and finished third. ... Ninth-starting Dalton Cook moved into fourth on lap 41. ... Ben Watkins gained six spots and finished fifth. ... Eighth-starting Tyler Millwood was one of the few drivers running the extreme outside in the closing laps and finished sixth. ... Fourth-running Joseph Joiner drew the race's fourth caution when contact with Austin Horton led to him spinning in turn three on lap 38; both drivers were forced to tag the field, with Joiner rebounding to finish 13th and Horton placing 17th. ... Second-starting Payton Freeman led the first 15 laps before giving way to Owens; he pitted from seventh with a flat tire on lap 38 and finished 16th. ... Michael Page drew the second yellow with a spin on lap 19, then proceeded to drive around the track backwards for nearly a full lap, stopping to show his displeasure with Pearson Lee Williams; video replay showed that Josh Putnam may have had a hand in helping to turn Page. ... The feature was slowed by six cautions and lasted 50 minutes, with 18 drivers completing 50 laps.
On the move: Pearson Lee Williams of Dublin, Ga., started 15th and finished third.
