Kyle Berck takes the checkers at Huset’s for his $5,053 victory.
What won the race: Going from third to first on a lap-five restart, Kyle Berck of Marquette, Neb., fought off Josh Leonard's late challenge and led the rest of Saturday’s opening 25-lapper on the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series at Huset’s Speedway. Berck earned $5,053 on the undercard of Silver Dollar Nationals action at the event’s new home. Leonard finished 0.796 of a second behind in the runner-up spot.
Quotable: "This track is really tricky. It's a blast to run, but you got to really know where to be," Berck said. "I knew they were gonna dive-bomb me, slide (past) me in (turn) one if they would. It was just 'Do I stay on the outside or counter the move,' and I had to do a little bit of both, on Tad (Pospisil) early and then on Leonard there. This car was really good. It makes an old guy like me look OK."
Key notes: Berck, a five-time series champion, notched his first series victory of the season and series-leading 98th of his career. ... Josh Leonard briefly went ahead of Berck in turns one and two on a lap-19 restart after Berck was hung up with Tad Pospisil before retaking the green. But Berck made a crossover move on Leonard entering turn three to regain the lead. .. Charlie McKenna, who led the first four laps, spun into turn three after running the middle of a three-wide battle for the lead on a lap-19 restart. ... Four other cautions slowed the action. ... Series points leader Jesse Sobbing spun exiting turn four on the restart following McKenna's spin. ... Chris Spieker spun on the frontstretch on the 19th lap. ... Top-10 runners Dylan Sillman and Bill Leighton Jr. spun on the 17th lap. ... The first yellow came on the fourth lap when Spieker ended up facing the wrong direction after multicar contact in turn three. ... The series made its Huset's debut.
On the move: Scott Ward of Watertown, S.D., started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Berck’s Longhorn Chassis is sponsored by Aurora Cooperative, Strobel Manufacturing, Griess Truck Wash, Preferred Popcorn, Stevens Bros. Bison Farms and Campbell Family Farms.
