What won the race: Second-starter Charlie McKenna of Ames, Iowa, scored a flag-to-flag victory worth $3,000 in Friday's 25-lap Malvern Bank Series stop at Thayer County Speedway. McKenna notched his second career series victory and his second overall win of the season following his $3,000 triumph in June's Hoker Trucking Series visit to West Liberty (Iowa) Raceway.
Quotable: “You know you’re leading (these) things and you’re out front and you just think, Don’t mess this thing up," McKenna said. “I kept thinking (Justin Zeitner) is gonna be coming on the top any second. Man, I just (had) to stay on the bottom and keep my nose clean and take care of business.”
Key notes: Pole-starting Josh Leonard remained within striking distance of McKenna for the entire distance but settled for second, 1.748 seconds back. ... Sixth-starting Justin Zeitner moved into third on the opening lap and completed the podium. ... Series points leader Tad Pospisil started and finished fifth. ... Jesse Sobbing advanced three positions and finished seventh. ... Defending race winner Kyle Berck lost three spots and finished 10th. ... Run in conjunction with the Thayer County Fair, Friday's green-to-checkered feature lasted seven minutes and saw 16 competitors complete 25 laps with 17 running at the finish.
On the move: Bill Leighton Jr. of Omaha, Neb., started 12th and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: McKenna’s MB Customs Race Car is sponsored by My Yield Seed Treaters, Can-Am Auto Salvage, Precision Planting by JNJ Farms, Shore Motor Company, 712 Media, Always Race Day, Motorsports Marketing Innovations, CMD Shocks, Jig E Signs and Dirt Track Bank.
