Sam Seawright waves the checkered flag in victory lane.
What won the race: Pole-starting Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., repelled challenges from Trey Mills early and Joseph Joiner late to register a flag-to-flag victory in Saturday's 50-lap Governor's Cup at Talladega Short Track. Seawright earned $10,000 for his first Valvoline Iron-Man Southern Series triumph of the season and the third of his career.
Quotable: “This is awesome. I’ve been wanting to win the Governor’s Cup for years,” Seawright said. “You know Michael (Page) is my crew chief and I’ve been watching him win it for years, and I couldn’t ask for somebody better to help me man. We started struggling a little bit (so) we just go back to doing what Michael wants to do and the car is fast again.”
Key notes: Sixth-starting Joiner, of Milton, Fla., moved into the runner-up position on lap a lap-26 restart and trailed Seawright the rest of the way, finishing 0.518 of a second back. ... Fifth-starting Austin Horton took third when Mills hopped the turn-two cushion on lap 40 and completed the podium; Mills settled for fourth after pressuring Seawright in the early laps. ... The first of two red flags appeared on lap 25 when fifth-running Tyler Millwood spun while trying to lap Chase Oliver; both drivers continued, but Millwood, unhappy about the contact, stopped in front of Oliver and blocked him under yellow. Both drivers exited their cars and began arguing, necessitating a 10-minute stoppage for security and police to restore order and leading to Millwood and Oliver being parked for the night. ... The second 10-minute red flag flew on lap 27 when fourth-running Dillon Tidmore hopped the turn-two cushion and climbed the wall with his right-front tire; Tidmore rode the wall until the start of the backstretch when his left front dug in, causing his car to flip several times before landing on its wheels. Caden Mullinax sped into Tidmore's motionless car, ending both of their nights; both were unhurt. ... Josh Putnam pulled off while running 10th on lap 42. ... Eleventh-running Billy Moyer called it a night on lap 18. ... Saturday's 50-lap feature lasted 31 minutes with 11 drivers completing the entire distance and 15 running at the finish.
On the move: Will Roland of Jasper, Ga., started 17th and finished eighth.
