Will Roland takes the checkered flag first in Saturday's Crate Racin' USA portion of the Ice Bowl at Talladega Short Track.
What won the race: Repelling challenges from Cory Hedgecock in the early going, Will Roland of Jasper, Ga., led all 40 laps from the pole to win Saturday's Roger Dabbs Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout portion of the 33rd annual Ice Bowl at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala. Roland collected $4,000 in topping the Winter Shootout Series opener.
Quotable: “I’ve wanted to win this race, I’ve been watching it all my life,” Roland said in victory lane. “I can’t believe it, ya know, it was a perfect weekend; the track was great. I’m just glad lapped traffic didn’t get me, I made my way through it. I couldn’t do it without everybody that helps me. We got (our BMF Race Car) real balanced right now. I’m just real happy with it.”
Key notes: Loudon, Tenn.'s Hedgecock stalked Roland for much of the race before late restarts saw him fade to finish fourth. ... Seventh-starting Tyler Millwood took the runner-up spot on a lap-37 restart and finished 1.303 seconds behind Roland. ... Eighth-starting Matt Henderson followed Millwood on the restart and completed the podium. ... Cruz Skinner rounded-out the top-five finishers. ... Riley Hickman inherited sixth on the final lap when Tucker Anderson slowed. ... Hayden Cardwell spun from second to draw the race's second caution on lap 36; Cardwell pursued leader Roland when he hopped the turn-two cushion and climbed the wall before spinning, ending his night. BMF Race Cars — owned by Hedgecock — held the top-three positions prior to Cardwell's spin. ... Richie Stephens spun after being lapped early, drawing the first stoppage on lap 32. ... Saturday's feature was slowed by three cautions and lasted 17 minutes, with 13 drivers completing 40 laps and 20 running at the finish.
On the move: Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., started 19th and finished 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Roland’s BMF Race Car carries sponsorship from Roland Tire, Mountain Ridge Realty, RRR Investments, Pee Wee’s Wrecker Service, Penske Racing Shocks, Base Racing Fuel, Hoosier Tire and Slicker Graphics.
