What won the race: Following a back-and-forth battle with Justin Williams in the closing laps, second-starting Tyler Bare of Rockbridge Baths, Va., reclaimed the lead for the final time on lap 48 and won Saturday's 50-lap Battle for the Bridge at Natural Bridge Speedway. The $5,000 victory is Bare's first of the season on the Vision Wheel Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series and the fifth of his career — his first since last fall at Beckley (W.Va.) Motor Speedway.
Key notes: Bare led twice for 26 laps (24-46, 48-50) to grab his third straight Natural Bridge triumph, dating back to July 13's $5,000 Freedom 40 victory in unsanctioned Limiteds. The win moves him into the series points lead. ... Sixth-starting Williams, of Lynchburg, Va., challenged Bare in the late going and led lap 47 before Bare regained control and sped to the checkers by 1.185 seconds. ... Robbie Emory led the opening 23 laps from the pole before being overtaken by Bare and slipping to fifth. ... The race was slowed by two lengthy cautions, the first requiring 15 minutes for cleanup after third-starting Russell Erwin slowed abruptly in front of the field, ending the nights Matt Hildebrand, Samuel Bryant and Jack Brown among others. Erwin, the series points leader, continued to finish fourth. ... The second incident came on lap 25, just after Bare passed Emory, involving Billy Beachler and Larry Ramsey. ... The feature lasted 37 minutes, with 12 drivers completing the distance and 18 running at the checkers.
On the move: Corey Gordon of Charlotte, N.C., started 21st and finished eighth.
Winner's sponsors: Bare’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Race City Performance (RCP) by Don Blackshear CT525 and carries sponsorship from Blue Grass Farm Beef and Hay, JTB and Son Hauling & Excavating, Dottie’s Country Store, Smith Farm & Equipment Repair, May’s Recycling, D&K Beverly, SLX Southlex Cattle Company, Myers-Holum, Raphine Transport, Booper Bare Racing and Sunoco Race Fuels.
Points chase: After Natural Bridge: 1. Tyler Bare (471); 2. Russell Erwin (469); 3. Blake Craft (413); 4. Dan Breuer (396); 5. Robbie Emory (359).
